Do you have a morning routine? How about a nighttime one as well? Skincare, makeup, and body treatments have never been more popular. The beauty industry tops over 80 billion dollars a year! If that incredible number makes your head spin just listen to this, the packaging alone produces 120 billion pounds of waste, PER YEAR. How can we keep ourselves feeling and looking good without adding to the ever-growing landfills of waste? Learn how to create a more sustainable routine that will keep your carbon footprint low.

Cotton Pads- cotton pads are used for make-up removal and are often a single-use item. Make them last longer by cutting them in half or swapping them out with reusable cotton pads. Make your own by cutting up old towels into small pieces.

Shampoo and Conditioner bars- Often shampoo and conditioner come in large, single-use plastic bottles. Because of their unique shape and opening, there are hardly any ways to re-purpose these packages. So why not eliminate them completely? Shampoo bars and conditioner bars are solid forms of cleansers. Often packaged in smaller amounts of recyclable cardboard, these severely cut back on your landfill input. On the plus side, these also usually last longer, saving you money in the process!

Homemade body scrub- Body scrub is in the same vein as shampoo and conditioner. Heavy packaging with very little reuse factor. Did you know how easy, and cheap, it is to create your own? With some everyday home materials, you can make a natural and organic scrub all your own. Check out this easy-to-follow recipe!

Toothbrush and Toothpaste- This should be a staple in everyone’s daily routine, brushing your teeth can easily be more sustainable by swapping products. Many toothpaste companies have started recycling programs that will reuse your spent tubes. But toothpaste powder is a popular option for many as well! This can come in glass jars and the concentrated products last longer while keeping spending down. Toothbrushes with swappable heads or bamboo bases can prove to be more sustainable in the long term. Considering 1 billion toothbrushes are thrown into landfills every year, this can be a great way to cut waste in half!

Your everyday routine is the perfect place to cut down on waste. After sustainability becomes a habit, recycling can seem easy. You’ll notice over time that while saving the planet, you’ll save money on bills as well. It is a win-win for those exploring a less wasteful lifestyle.
